Help Us Help You Have a Better Tattoo
Third Dimension Tattoo — please read before your appointment. Getting a great tattoo is a team effort. Here's how you can help your artist do their best work — and how to get the result you'll love for life.
The Do's
Before your appointment
• Make your decisions at your consultation. Size, placement, style, the details that matter — that's the time to talk them through with your artist, together.
• Put your references together. Photos, screenshots, drawings — anything that shows what you're picturing helps your artist see what's in your head.
• Get a good night's sleep the night before.
• Eat a real meal before you come in, and stay hydrated. Tattooing on an empty stomach is how people get lightheaded.
• Shower and come in with clean skin. Moisturizing the area in the days leading up (not the day of) helps too.
• Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the area being tattooed — and something you don't mind possibly getting ink on.
• Bring what you need for a long session: phone charger, headphones, water, a snack.
At the studio
• Arrive on time. Your artist's day is built around your slot.
• Speak up at the stencil stage. Placement and size feedback is welcome before the needle starts — that's exactly what the stencil is for.
• If you need support, bring one person. Space in our work areas is limited, so no more than one person can be near them — and coming alone is appreciated when you can.
• Keep the noise down, please. Tattooing requires focus, and a lot of crosstalk makes it hard to concentrate. You don't have to be silent — just be mindful.
After
• Follow your artist's aftercare instructions exactly — they're how a good tattoo stays good.
• Keep it clean, moisturize thin, and keep it out of the sun while it heals.
The Don'ts
• Don't drink alcohol the night before or day of (and avoid blood thinners unless prescribed — if they are, tell your artist). Alcohol thins the blood and makes the work harder and the heal worse.
• Don't come in sunburned or freshly tanned — damaged skin can't be tattooed well, and may have to be rescheduled.
• Don't come in sick. Rescheduling is always better than powering through.
• Don't bring a crowd — and please don't bring small children. Our space is limited and it's a working studio, not a waiting room.
• Don't micromanage the process. Every artist creates differently — some are free-flowing, like a jazz musician; some are calculated, like a classical musician. Once the decisions are made at your consultation, let your artist work. Micromanaging often makes things more complicated and can yield a lower quality tattoo.
• Don't spring a major design change on the day without talking to your artist first — call ahead and we'll figure it out together.
• Don't pick, scratch, soak, or swim while your tattoo is healing. No baths, pools, or hot tubs until it's fully healed, and never pick at peeling skin.
